Experimental · MintCat only CDCompat is still a test build and only works with MintCat: the ZIP contains a native DLL that needs the UE4SS loader bundled with MintCat, and mint / mintfixed won’t load it. If you only want CD2, use the original CD2 setup instead.
Download the CDCompat ZIP above and the enemy packs (MEV, the OBNC patch, DEA, EEE, plus YoMAMA, which only a few difficulties need); the packs are in the enemy packs section below. You don’t need the original CD2 or CD1; CDCompat already contains both.
Close the game and add the files to MintCat
Add the ZIP to MintCat as-is; don’t unzip it. It contains both a PAK and a native DLL, and both are needed. Also add Unified UI, the in-game mod menu where the CDCompat settings live; don’t install it together with Mod Hub. Unified UI ↗
Keep only CDCompat and leave UE4SS on
Uncheck the original CD2, CD1, the CD1 client and any other CDCompat version in MintCat and keep only this one, or they conflict and your difficulty won’t work. Keep UE4SS on in MintCat’s settings (it is by default).
Press Install mods
After checking your mods, press Install mods, or nothing is actually installed.
Launch the game
Hosting: in the Space Rig, press B to open the mod menu, go to CDCompat, choose Use CD1 or Use CD2 under Engine selection, then pick a difficulty in the matching CD1 diff or CD2 diff tab and launch a mission. You can only switch engines in the Space Rig. Codes are on the Custom difficulties page.
Joining: nothing to set up. CDCompat follows the host’s engine and difficulty automatically.
When playing together, everyone needs the same enemy packs, or custom enemies won’t show up correctly.
Linux / Proton players: keep your existing launch options and add dwmapi=n,b to WINEDLLOVERRIDES.
Enemy packs
The same files the original CD2 uses; if you already have them, skip this.
More Enemy Variants
5.4
Enemy pack used by most CD2 difficulties. Just install it.
The enemy packs are the versions I currently play with.
How to use
When you host
In the Space Rig, press B to open the mod menu (Unified UI) and go to CDCompat:
Engine selection
Choose Use CD1 or Use CD2 for the next mission.
CD1 diff
With CD1, pick a CD1 difficulty here.
CD2 diff
With CD2, pick a CD2 difficulty here.
Then pick a mission and launch. For example, to play ND: Use CD2 → choose ND under CD2 diff → pick a mission → launch.
You can only switch engines in the Space Rig. During a mission you can change difficulty within the same engine, but not the engine itself. Opening a diff tab doesn’t switch engines; only the first tab does.
When you join
Nothing to set up. CDCompat follows the host’s engine, shows their difficulty, and resupplies work normally.
Looking for difficulty codes? See Custom difficulties. The Get Difficulties button in the mod opens this list too, in its Traditional Chinese version; switch to English with the language menu at the top.
After a game update
If you see “CDCompat runtime is not active” after a game update, CDCompat doesn’t recognise the new game version yet and switches itself off to avoid crashes or save-file corruption. You need a newer build: check the download section above for one. If there isn’t one yet, switch back to the original CD2 plus the CD1 client: you can host CD2 and join anyone’s CD1 or CD2 lobby; you just can’t host CD1 yourself.
FAQ
The game says “CDCompat runtime is not active”
The game was updated and CDCompat doesn’t recognise the new version yet, so it switches itself off to avoid crashes or save-file corruption. Download the latest build above, replace the old one in MintCat and press Install mods again. Future game updates may need a new build too.
If there’s no new build yet, or if I ever stop maintaining CDCompat, switch back to original CD2 + the CD1 client: you can host CD2 and join anyone’s CD1 or CD2 lobby; you just can’t host CD1 yourself. Downloads and steps are in the original CD2 setup page.
Why not just use the CD1 client?
The CD1 client can only join CD1 lobbies, not host them. CDCompat can host and join both.
Why not convert CD1 difficulties to CD2?
Converters exist (CD2ifier), but in my experience the results still don’t play like the originals, so CDCompat keeps both original engines and combines them instead.
Can I paste, save or delete difficulties myself?
Yes, it works just like the original CD1 / CD2. The only catch is that the in-game JSON editor doesn’t pretty-print, so the code shows up as one dense block and is hard to edit in game. Pasting someone else’s code and saving it is completely fine; if you want to edit it, do that in an external editor first and paste it in.
CD2 (Custom Difficulty 2) beta 18 is by TheBrain from the Practical DRG Discord.
Both engines belong to their original creators. CDCompat is my integration of the two with the compatibility changes it needs; I’m not the author of CD1 or CD2. If the original authors want changes or removal, please contact me.
